Arkoe was founded in 1874 by Dr. P. H. Talbot. In the novel Peter Wilkins and the Flying Indians, by Robert Paltock, these fictional flying Indians take off and land on suitable stretches of rivers called 'arkoes'. The view of the river from the library windows of his home is said to have reminded Dr. Talbot of one of these 'arkoes'.

Talbot was murdered in 1880 and both of his sons were hanged. They are buried next to their father in Arkoe and their tombstone reads "We died innocent."
